“The Alabama outside linebacker carried some red flags into the draft. At the NFL Scouting Combine in February, he said he’d failed several drug tests in college. He also was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit in September.

Those might have given some of his potential NFL suitors second thoughts. But the Ravens were able to get a deeper perspective on Williams. Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome had a College Football Hall of Fame career at Alabama and maintains a close connection to the program.

“”We’re fortunate because of our relationship with Alabama,”” Baltimore assistant general manager Eric DeCosta told Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com. “”And the fact that our GM, Ozzie Newsome, played there, we get a lot of good information about those prospects. And we admire those players and we love the fact that they play for a very successful program and for a coach that has an NFL background. It is a program where we believe players come into this league from Alabama and they’re ready for the NFL. And you can’t say that about every program in the country. …

“”We interviewed Timmy at least three different times — once at the combine and once in Baltimore and then once in Tuscaloosa. We spoke with multiple coaches on their staff and multiple support-staff people at the school. We used various different people to interview Timmy, and it really provided a strong assessment of his strengths and weaknesses and his best situation to survive and succeed and really thrive in the NFL.””Williams said he “”was very truthful”” with the Ravens and took responsibility for his actions.

“”He was very up front about it,”” Newsome said. “”At the end of the day, when we were talking with him on the phone, he understands that. He will accept that challenge as to not allow that to happen, but I can’t sit here and guarantee it.””

Williams said he ended up in the right place.

“”It always felt like I was meant to be a Raven,”” Williams said of his visit to Baltimore before the draft. “”The coaches, the past players that played there, just the culture and also one guy that I used to run sprints with when I was freshman and he was a junior was (former Alabama All-American and Baltimore Pro Bowl linebacker) C.J. Mosley. I always wanted to model my work ethic after C.J. Mosley. So coming into Alabama, I looked up to him a lot. So I’m knowing that they have that type of players on the roster that’s going to grind hard and work hard.””

Williams said he was praying with his family when Newsome called him with the news that the Ravens were drafting him.

“”I was feeling like I should have (been chosen) earlier,”” Williams said. “”But as I say, I’m on God’s time, I’m not on my time. God was going to put me in the perfect position that he thought I was going to flourish. What else better place than being a Raven?””

Baltimore will hold its rookie minicamp Friday through Sunday. In addition to the Ravens’ draft picks, undrafted rookies signed by the team and invited tryout players will participate. Among the players will be former Alabama cornerback Marlon Humphrey, Baltimore’s first-round draft choice.”
